Fines introduced for ignoring a red ‘X’ on motorways

Ignoring a ‘red X’ sign on a Smart Motorway could land you a £100 fine, with police granted use of camera evidence from today.  Beforehand, fines were only levied to drivers illegally using closed lanes if they were caught by an officer at the time of the offence. Highways England has issued more than 180,000 warning letters to drivers who have actively ignored lane closures over the past three years.
